Performer Patricia Routledge, best known for playing Hyacinth Bucket in the classic TV sitcom the series Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96, her agent announced.

Additionally, she starred in Alan Bennett's celebrated solo performances and played BBC One's amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.

"We mournfully announce to announce the loss of Dame Patricia Routledge, who died peacefully in her sleep recently with loved ones near."

"Despite her advanced years, her passion for her work and for reaching out to fans remained strong, just as new generations have continued to find her through her cherished screen performances."

Her agent noted: "She leaves a void by her family and friends and by her loyal fans around the world."

A Life in the Spotlight

Patricia Routledge was primarily recognized as Hyacinth Bucket - with the affected pronunciation "bouquet" - a funny persona who represented the height of affectation and class consciousness.

"She is a wonderfully awful character and I enjoyed playing her enormously," the actress commented.

Keeping Up Appearances ran from the early 1990s, and the following year she was chosen as the most beloved female performer at the BBC anniversary ceremony.

She also earned praise both live and recorded after beginning her professional life in the stage in the 1950s era.

Following roles in London theater, she made a name in the United States when she was awarded the Broadway trophy for best lead actress in a musical on Broadway in New York for Darling of the Day in the late 1960s.

She proved equally skilled at serious drama as she was at light entertainment - she took part in Shakespeare's histories at the RSC, then received an Laurence Olivier Award for leading musical actress for Candide in the 1980s.

The 80s also marked her rise as a true national TV star - landing appearances by comedian Victoria Wood in her comedy series, and writer Alan Bennett in three of his renowned Talking Heads monologues, including the 1988 piece A Lady of Letters, for which she was given a Bafta nomination.

She garnered additional Bafta nods, for the popular sitcom, in the early 1990s, then headlined the main character as a senior citizen on a journey into detective work in BBC One's Hetty Wainthropp Investigates between 1996 and 98.

She received an Order of the British Empire in 1993, a Commander of the British Empire in 2004, and damehood in recent years.
