Significant Internet Outage Hits Dozens Online Platforms and Mobile Apps

An extensive internet disruption has disrupted many online platforms and applications globally, and users experiencing troubles connecting to the web due to difficulties at Amazon’s cloud computing system.

The disrupted platforms encompass Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-operated platforms including its primary shopping website and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was disrupted in addition to its affiliates the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, with additional accounts of issues accessing the HMRC website on Monday morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring device owners turned to social media to state their doorbells were failing.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of problems on specific applications reached the tens of thousands for each app.

The company stated that the outage originated in the eastern region of the America at Amazon Web Services, a section that provides essential web infrastructure for many companies, who utilize resources on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting system.

Soon after late night (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), the company announced “higher problem frequencies and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a area on the east coast of the United States. The ripple effect appeared to affect services globally, with the problem monitoring service showing outages with the corresponding services in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on internet outages, also reported a rise in problems on that morning, including several cases found in the Virginia area, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the issues originated.
